Which Hospitals Are Ranked #1 In Tennessee?

health careHospitals differ when it comes to specialties and equipment, thus, knowing which hospitals have the best equipment and doctors can spell the difference between life and death.  There are more than 150 hospitals in Tennessee, and among these hospitals, two are ranked as top hospitals in the U.S., while nine hospitals meet the strong-performance standards in the state.  If you are trying to look for the best hospital in the state, the hospital rankings are available at http://health.usnews.com/best-hospitals/area/tn.  In this list, you would be able to identify hospitals which have high national rankings according to specialty.

The following are #1 ranked metro hospitals:

1.         Vanderbilt University Medical Center – This hospital is located in the Nashville metro area and is ranked number 1.  It’s also the best hospital as per national standards based on 11 specialties.

2.         Methodist Hospital – This hospital is located in Memphis and has been ranked number 1 in the metro area.  It is also considered the best in 12 high-performing specialties.

3.         Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital – This hospital is located at Vanderbilt in Nashville.  It is one of the nationally-ranked hospitals for children.

4.         Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital – Located in Memphis, this children’s hospital achieved national ranking as one of the top children’s hospital in the U.S.

5.         St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital – Also located in Memphis, this children’s hospital received a place in the national ranking as one of the top-performing children’s hospital in the U.S.

How Hospitals Are Ranked

The U.S. News rankings visited and studied 4,800 hospitals all across the country.  Among thousands of hospitals, only 732 were featured as the Best Regional Hospitals.  They base their rankings on 16 medical specialties.  50 hospitals are ranked according to specialty.  Additional hospitals are also credited as high-performing.  Hospitals that have received recognition as high-performing in at least one specialty and have been nationally-ranked are considered as belonging to the Best Regional Hospitals.

For a hospital to be considered for national-ranking, it must meet the following requirements.  The hospital must belong in the top 25 percent of all hospitals in 12 specialties and meet various standards including specialty-specific minimums for volume of patients.

For cancer, out of the 4,793 only 25 percent or 901 hospitals were recognized as high-performing hospitals when it comes to cancer treatment.

For the specialties of Psychiatry, Ophthalmology, Rheumatology, and Rehabilitation, the rankings are based on medical specialists’ opinions.  Hospitals will be recognized as high-performing if they receive nominations from a minimum of three percent of specialists who participated.  If the nomination comes from five percent or more of responding specialists, these hospitals will receive a national ranking.
