Tennessee Health Insurance Helps with New Vaccination Requirements

September 2nd, 2010

On July 1, new requirements mandate that children enrolling in child care, kindergarten, preschool and seventh grade need to be up-to-date on immunizations. Similar changes go into effect in 2011 for new college students in Tennessee.

One of the most immediate changes of the new healthcare law is an end to copays and deductibles for recommended immunizations. These out-of-your pocket expenses will also no longer apply for certain preventive screenings, either. Tennessee health insurance plans will enact these changes between September 23 and January 1. Tennessee Health Insurance Secret to Lower Deductibles

August 11th, 2010

You’re right if you think that high-deductible health plans offer lower premiums, but here’s a secret that can cut your deductible, too.   If you, god forbid, suffer an accident with a high-deductible health insurance plan, you could spend a couple of thousand dollars before your coverage even begins.

With supplemental accident insurance, instead of that $2,000, you’d only have to pay $100.  That’ right -  for only $22 a month – you can get $5,000 worth of supplemental accident insurance with 24 hour a day coverage and a deductible of only $100 anytime someone suffers an accidental bodily injury. Health Insurance In Tennessee Still in Line with National Reform

August 5th, 2010

The Tennessee legislature failed to block healthcare reform by the time lawmakers adjourned the final year of Tennessee’s 106th legislative term on June 10, 2010. That means people who can afford health insurance in Tennessee will still be required to purchase it. So, what does that mean for Tennessee?

Now people who can’t afford or are denied health insurance often don’t seek help before their worsening symptoms demand emergency treatment. Prevention and early intervention is cheaper in terms of how people suffer and die, but it’s also less costly in terms of how much additional care they ultimately require. In the present system, hospitalized patients with insurance end up subsidizing those without insurance anyway. Read the rest of this entry »

Escape the Tennessee Health Insurance Scams

July 17th, 2010

After a cease-and-desist order stopped defunct Tennessee-based American Trade Association (ATA) from selling bogus policies and not paying claims, ATA members were notified their policies were being transferred.

In reality, no authorized rollover of ATA policies has been authorized, and no other entity has been authorized to debit bank or credit accounts for premium payments.  Two additional companies that are not licensed to sell Tennessee health insurance may be running scams. Marketers using the names of Best Benefits Association and Healthcare America have told ATA members their policies were transferred in attempts to steal premium payments. Tennessee Health Insurance You Can Trust

July 9th, 2010

Tennessee-based American Trade Association (ATA) has collected more than $22 million in premiums nationwide in what appears to be a public scam. On April 27, 2010, a Tennessee state court found approximately $7 million worth of owed medical claims for people who purchased insurance with ATA, but ATA only had $2.1 million in assets.

On April 9th, an emergency cease-and-desist order was issued to block ATA from selling health insurance. The case against ATA was prosecuted by Assistant Attorney General Andrew Black. Insurance Superintendent Mila Kofman ordered ATA to pay outstanding medical bills, premium refunds, and $1,161,500 in civil penalties. Read the rest of this entry »

Health Insurance In Tennessee And Home Health Care

June 24th, 2010

A 2010 Cost of Care Survey shows that Tennessee is the 11th most affordable state for home health care services. The national average is $19 per hour. While hourly rates in Knoxville and Nashville are $18 and $19, respectively, the hourly rate is $16 in Memphis.

Tennessee health insurance policies typically cover some home care services for acute needs, but coverage for long-term care varies. Blue Cross Blue Shield of TN generally pays for skilled professional home care services with a cost-sharing provision, and these policies sometimes cover personal care services. Cost sharing varies with individual policies, but often is not required. Read the rest of this entry »

Health Insurance In Tennessee Is Becoming More Valuable Than Ever

June 11th, 2010

Along with health care reform to give more people access to medical care, there is a greater effort to make medical care safer for people. Hospitals in eight cities around the world showed that using a simple surgical checklist during major operations reduces deaths and complications by more than one-third. This yearlong study was led by researchers from Harvard School of Public Health in collaboration with the World Health Organization. The results are published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

During the study, inpatient deaths after major operations fell from 1.5 to 0.8 percent (more than 40 percent) when the checklist was used. Similar reductions in complications were seen in both high income and lower income sites. In the U.S., the Institute for Healthcare Improvement announced a “sprint” to introduce the checklist in all 4,000 hospitals that took part in its 5 Million Lives Campaign, a national effort to improve quality and safety. These hospitals represent two-thirds of American hospitals. Read the rest of this entry »
