The Most Expensive Health Insurance To Avoid

save on health careIf you have an employer-sponsored health insurance plan, you might think that group coverage is cheaper than individual policies, but it is not.  As health care costs continue to rise, did you notice that the premiums you are paying increased as well? Employers have been shifting more of that cost to their staff with higher co-pays, bigger deductibles, and sometimes, even a larger share of the premium price.

Because of this, some people find it’s actually cheaper to get their own plan in the individual market than to pay for premiums through group coverage at work.  That’s particularly true if you have other family members on your group coverage.

In the individual market, you’ll see that there’s a big difference in cost. The Tennessee health insurance plans that come with the most sticker shock either allow you to go to any doctor, or they don’t have the typical out-of-pocket costs like co-pays or deductibles.

Being able to see any doctor may sound great, but for what that plan will cost on a yearly basis, you could do a lot better.  The plans that don’t restrict coverage to a specific provider network are called indemnity plans.

You’ve probably heard of HMOs and PPOs.  Well, those plans do set up their own provider networks and limit coverage for other doctors.  Once you find a plan that pays for services from your preferred doctor with the lowest out-of-pocket costs, you’ll be fine with a less expensive plan like these.

You won’t have any co-pay to see in-network providers for what’s called recommended preventive health care, like annual exams or flu shots. And, in an emergency, you can be treated by any provider, in-network or not, without being charged out-of-network rates.

You may even want to consider those plans that come with a deductible because they have lower premiums than non-deductible plans.  That deductible does not apply to a lot of preventive services, like screening procedures for the most common cancers, or high blood pressure.
