Comparisons: How Can You Keep Your Medigap Premiums Low? Medicare
Supplement Insurance has 10 distinct plans to manage the co-insurance, co-pays
and two deductibles that can cost you money with Medicare's coverage. You can
also find Medicare Supplement Insurance that expands Medicare's coverage. While
Medicare has no help if you need emergency care when vacationing abroad, Medicare
Supplement Insurance can pick up 80 percent of emergency medical care in other
countries.Let's
take a look at which Medigap
Policies cover Medicare's deductibles. To protect you from the Part A deductible
of $1,100 per illness, you have a choice of nine different Medigap Policies. You
can also select to be reimbursed for 50, 75 or 100 percent of that deductible
with different Medigap Policies.Medicare
Supplement Plans typically have higher premiums for more comprehensive coverage
so you can keep your premiums low by selecting plans that only cover what you
think you'll need. For example, if hospitalization is unlikely, you might choose
one of the Medicare
Supplement Plans that has no coverage for hospital bills that Medicare doesn't
pay. To be safe (it is insurance against the unexpected, after all), you might
choose a plan that only reimburses you for 50 or 75 percent of Medicare's deductible
on hospital bills.The
Medigap
Plans that include higher co-pays for doctor visits and emergency room visits
also typically keep premiums low. If you only anticipate needing doctor services
occasionally, then Plans K and L can help you save with their low premiums. Other
Medigap Plans have additional ways to keep premiums down. Two
new Medicare
Supplement Insurance Plans, Plans M and N, have lower premiums than some of
the plans that were available prior to June of 2010. With Plan M, you pay for
half (50 percent) of Medicare's Part A $1,100 deductible and all (100 percent)
of the Part B $155 deductible. With
Medicare
Supplement Plan N, you keep 100-percent coverage for the Part A $1,100 deductible
and you only pay for the $155 Part B deductible and co-pays to see doctors or
go to the emergency room. Co-pays are usually $20 for a doctor appointment and
$50 for a trip to the emergency room so Medicare Supplement Plan N is a good choice
if you expect few doctor bills but want to guard against high hospital bills.Medigap
Insurance also has high-deductible plans that offer lower premiums than plans
with low deductibles. Plans F and J come in a standard-deductible version and
a $2,000-deductible version? If you're relatively healthy, such high-deductible
plans may be an ideal choice to keep your Medigap Insurance premiums low. Here's
another way to cut your premium. If you're happy with your doctors and they accept
Medicare's pre-approved rate, you don't need Medicare
Supplemental Insurance to cover what's known as Part B excess charges (when
doctors charge more than Medicare will pay).If
keeping your premiums low is essential, you'll want to stay away from comprehensive
plans like Medigap
Plan F. Although it is very popular, Medigap Plan F typically has relatively
high premiums in exchange for all the protection it gives you against Medicare's
lack of coverage.Apply
some of the same ideas you used to keep your health insurance premiums low before
you turned 65 and you can keep the premiums down on your Medicare
Supplemental Health Insurance, too. The better informed you become about the
different plans available through Medicare Supplemental Health Insurance, the
more sensible ways you'll find to keep premiums low without risking high out-of-pocket
medical costs.After
you've done the Medigap comparisons between different plans, you may be able to
save even more on premiums. With Medigap
comparisons of the difference in premiums from all the insurers who offer
Medigap in your state, you're sure to get the right plan for your situation. With
the standardization of Medigap Insurence,
you're assured that a Plan A, for instance, has the same coverage regardless of
which company sells it. The only difference you'll usually find between a Blue
Cross Plan A and a Humana Plan A is in premium price. In comparing Medigap Insurence,
it pays to do your homework.A
Humana Medicare Supplement may be more cost-effective than the same plan from
Blue Cross, but it never hurts to check prices in your area. Blue Cross is actually
made up of different insurers operating under the Blue Cross umbrella. Humana
Medicare Supplement plans include both low-premium and higher-premium plans,
so you have a wide selection. When
it comes to keeping your Medigap coverage
less expensive, when you apply can be critical. During your Medigap open enrollment
period, an insurer cannot deny your application based on a pre-existing health
condition. Even if you have cancer, heart disease or another serious illness,
you are guaranteed Medigap coverage.Being
able to get Medicare Supplement Insurence can save you hundreds, and possibly
thousands, of dollars a year. During open enrollment, an insurer cannot exclude
any pre-existing conditions or charge you any more than a healthy applicant would
be charged for Medicare Supplement Insurence.Your
open enrollment period begins on the first day of the month in which you are at
least 65 AND enrolled in Medicare Part B. To get the best
Medigap Insurance, it's crucial to apply during open enrollment, but it typically
only lasts for six months.Once
you enroll, plans are guaranteed to be renewable even if you develop health problems
so you're assured the best Medicare Supplement
even if your health deteriorates as long as you continue to pay the premiums.
As long as
we're comparing ways to supplement Medicare, let's clear up the difference between
Medicare Advantage Plans and Medigap. Medicare
Advantage Plans do not supplement Medicare. These plans provide your Part
A and B coverage through private insurers in place of Medicare, while Medigap
supplements the Original Medicare provided through the government.Medicare
