Haslam Takes “Wait and See” Approach To Obamacare

ObamacareEven though the Supreme Court had decided to uphold the health care reform law, Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam is taking the wait-and-see approach when it comes to implementing the changes (specifically the creation of the health insurance exchange) required by the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. Initially, the Governor wanted to approve the health insurance exchange legislation earlier this year. His fellow administrators convinced him to delay the approval process until next year because of the upcoming November election that might overturn the law.

Even if they’re taking things slow for now, Gov. Haslam said that Tennessee is ready to implement the necessary requirements for the state-based health insurance exchange bound to take place in 2014. Haslam’s administration will wait until January of next year before they’ll go through with the final legislative approval of the health insurance exchange in Tennessee.

In 2010, about 15 percent of Tennesseans did not have health care coverage. The health insurance exchange will serve as an online marketplace for small business owners and individuals looking for affordable Tennessee health insurance plans. The government hopes that competition will drive down premiums. The plans sold in the exchange are standardized making it easier for shoppers to focus on the cost of the plans and the quality of care provided.

Governor Haslam is hoping that the law will be overturned since he is worried that the full implementation of the health care reform law would be costly for the state. He also said that it will save the state more money if the law is overturned. The government is cutting lots of corners in the budgets of other departments to have enough funds in case they need to pay for the increase in health care costs brought about by the implementation of the mandates of the health care reform law.
